RT to DC: A Student Perspective

by Christina Lee, Senior Student California State University, Northridge BSRT Program

As a student, I had the wonderful opportunity to travel to Washington, DC, for a second year to help lobby for the CARE Bill. While most aspects of the conference and visits on the Hill were similar to those experienced by technologists like Lorenza and Diane, with whom I lobbied, it was my experience as a student that differs from theirs.

My first trip to D.C. last year was a completely new and eye-opening experience filled with confusion, excitement, and nerves. When I returned, I found myself lobbying to uninformed RTs who did not even know there were no national minimum standards. I even told a co-worker about the bill who then wrote a ten page paper on the bill for her history class.

Returning this year, I had a passion that enabled me to be more assertive and confident in meetings. I also came to D.C. already knowing how to communicate with legislative offices to get appointments, how to use the Metro like a local and how meetings with those offices would work. It was even more exciting to witness how supportive and interested those offices were with the bill this year as compared to last year.

Both trips were incredibly rewarding for me personally. Visiting the nation's Capitol to participate in the actual process of having a prospective bill enacted was truly a "once in a lifetime" experience, and knowing that I had a hand in the potential passage of a worthwhile federal law was quire remarkable. Also, I wish all students could witness the passion of the RT to DC attendees. They set a good example of leadership and active participation in a professional organization. I applaud them for taking control of the current situation and trying to improve on their future.

I have always recognized the importance of getting involved and am very grateful that the CSRT gives students the opportunity to do so. I know this opportunity gave both Lauren Murdock and me a way to further our involvement in our future profession. We have attended conferences as students and this trip helped solidify our enthusiasm for the field. I encourage all students to be active members of the CSRT and take advantage of the great opportunities CSRT offers.
