Complete report

President’s Message

John Radtke, MA, RTR, CNMT

Below are highlights of the major happenings going on right now with CSRT.

1. The "sold out" Northridge Meeting was a huge success. It could not have happened without the hard work of the speakers, CSRT Board and staff, the Northridge Hospital staff and administration, Doris Abrishami, CSRT member, Clinical Coordinator and Sr. Technologist at the hospital, and the fantastic response of the technologists who have shown their support.

2. Additional continuing education meetings are planned this year:

(a) Sutter Hospital in Sacramento on Sept. 13, 2008

(b) Annual Conference in Los Angeles, November 2008 (date and location to be determined)

(c) San Diego (to be determined)

3. CSRT sponsored the attendance of three representatives to Washington, D.C, to lobby for the CARE Bill. Two students and one technologist spoke to Senators and Representatives in Congress to garner their support when the bill comes to a vote. More information about the event and the attendees may be found on elsewhere on this website.

We sent one member to the ASRT Leadership academy. The ASRT paid for the entire trip which included four days of seminars on how to develop a successful CSRT affiliate chapter.

4. The ASRT gave the CSRT $2,500 to use for local chapter needs. We purchased a laptop computer, two projectors, and video cables and splitters so we no longer have to rent the equipment from hotels when we have meetings. At the San Mateo Annual Conference we found it too expensive to rent equipment from the hotel; over $1,500 per day x 3 days = $4,500 per meeting. Fortunately, CSRT was able to borrow equipment from Los Angeles City College which offset that expense.

5. Through CSRT, several thousand dollars in scholarships have been awarded to radiography students from California RT programs to support their financial needs. At last November’s Annual Conference, we awarded the Anna Ames and Ruth McMillan scholarship and gave monetary awards to winners and runners-up in both the Student Bowl and Scientific Display contests. Details about these awards were provided in the December Technigram. We have just awarded a minimum of $1300 to each of two winners of the Superior District RT to DC scholarship.

6. CSRT has been working with the Pacific Southwest Chapter Technologist Section of the Society of Nuclear Medicine to develop conjoint meetings and financial projects. At the Northridge meeting, two topics on nuclear medicine, Breast scintography and Sentinel Node Imaging were on the program. In recognition of the growing impact of PET/CT , CSRT will be providing more continuing education seminars for technologists in that "hot job" modality too.

7. CSRT is planning for the following topics for future agendas:

(a) Intravenous Contrast Administration for Radiologic Technologists

(b) California Fluoroscopy Permit preparation

(c) Digital Radiography Courses to meet new California requirements for radiographers and radiography schools. 8

. The CSRT.org website has been providing technologist members with 2 free continuing education units, information on job availability, continuing education seminar information, legislation matters, and other informative articles. CSRT is in the process of offering online registry review courses for student technologists and CT and PET registry preparation courses. We are planning to offer these services at no or minimal cost to members.

9. The CSRT has worked with mammographers to develop breast sonography classes that will be offered in the next few months.

10. The CSRT Board decided to no longer mail a hard copy of the Technigram to members unless they specifically ask for one. The cost of postage is becoming prohibitive and most technologists indicated they would prefer to read the Technigram on the Internet. A postcard will be provided in the last "mailed" Technigram which must be returned by May 1, if one wishes to continue to receive it in that format.

11. The financial status of the CSRT is solvent and very much in the "black". With over $130,000 in our accounts (checking, savings, and CDs) there should be sufficient funds to cover the 2008 Annual Conference that will be in Los Angeles and out continuing efforts provide new courses and services to our members and other professionals in the field.

Our biggest challenge is to increase membership. We need a strong California contingent of technologists when we approach the legislature with our requests for service. There is strength in numbers, so please join the CSRT and help your organization to speak with a louder voice!

Lastly, I would like to thank the CSRT Board for their hard work in making this past three months successful. Additionally, I would request that other imaging professionals come to the board meetings, held after our seminars, and learn about their organization. Hopefully you may want to run for an office on the CSRT board. We need you!

If you’re thinking, "I can’t do this", let me share these facts with you about our current board members. You will see that the board members are no different than you.

1. All the board members are working technologists, vendors or educators;

2. None of the board members are paid for their services. All board members volunteer their time and efforts to ensure that the CSRT is able to meet the needs of all technologists in California. Board members do receive paid trip expenses to attend board meetings. It is your time, interest and efforts that are needed.

3. Board members share a common belief: CSRT will continue to develop programs, seminars and services around the state to meet the need of technologists in California.

Thank you, members, for you consideration and support of CSRT...your Professional Organization.
